Welcome to the Bozeman Indian Education for
All web page. Our project, Teaching Teachers to Weave Together Essential
Understandings, is used to strengthen professional development in the
area of Indian Education for All as outlined in the district Long Range
Strategic Plan. This project includes five goals designed to create a
sustainable model of professional development that may be utilized in
any educational setting:
- To create, intensively train, and sustain, a
K-12 cadre of “master” and “lead” teachers who, train and lead all
teachers in the district into a deep and extensive understanding and
appreciation for American Indian history, politics, and culture.
- Provide focused teacher training based upon the seven Essential Understandings about Montana Indians.
- Utilize trained mentor teachers to assist
classroom teachers in the selection, organization, formulation, and
teaching of IEFA and multi-cultural concepts in social studies,
literature, science, music, health enhancement, and the arts.
- Collaborate with community and state
resources to assist teachers in meeting the requirements of IEFA,
including coursework from the Department of Native American Studies at
MSU and American Indian consultant organizations, such as Native Nexus
and tribal colleges.
- Use teacher surveys and formative and
summative student assessments throughout the life of this project to
ensure that understanding and appreciation of American Indian culture
learned through work with lead and master teachers has been imparted to students.
